We are surrounded by technology designed to grab us. There is a growing appetite for things designed to let us go.
Red badges, infinite feeds, reminders about reminders. Much of modern product design is built to maximise time spent. People have noticed, and many of them are tired.
Designing for less time, not more
A calm product respects the moment and then gets out of the way. It sends one reminder, not five. It lets people finish. It measures success by whether someone’s day got easier, not by how long they stayed.
Calm has to be designed
Calm isn’t the absence of design. It takes more decisions, not fewer: what to leave out, when to stay silent, how to make an interface feel settled rather than sparse. Soft colour, generous space and unhurried language all help, but the real work is in the restraint.
In a loud market, quiet is a position. It is one worth taking deliberately.
